Chapter 1
I'm embarrassed to say my life has been rather confusing. Thinking that I knew what I was doing, it never occurred to me that I absolutely didn't. Nestled into a routine of my liking and choosing I never expected it to evaporate suddenly. I've written it all down so you can make fun of me and think yourself superior.
Because it never seemed like work I owned a bookstore called The Heavy Lizard. I hired a sweet girl to deal with the customers and a guy to do the accounting. While this didn’t leave me much profit there were really only two things I liked to do anyway, read books, as long as they were strange or funny, and take care of my dog, Muldoon, a black mutt with a grin. Since I believed in the argument that a man (well, I am 16) is a dog’s best friend, I gave her a place at my table every day and I cooked her breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She liked her eggs with bacon. She did not like cheese. At lunch she liked to walk in the park. Muldoon would chase squirrels while I sat on the bench, pointing them out. I interpreted TV for her. I made birthday gifts for her. I made birthday gifts for my-self that were from Muldoon. We were the best of pals.
At work I tied her to the leg of my desk. I would pat her head, make dog noises that she had made, and look into her eyes. In the hot weather, she would pant openly and drool on the floor. In winter, she would keep close to the radiator, curled up protectively.
Then one day, after coming home from a delightful trip to the dry cleaners...
